Some Kind Of Nature (SKN) Atelier

At the MSA, I spent both my MArch years in the SKN Atelier. The atelier system grouped students into cohorts of 15-20 students whose projects sit under the overarching themes of the atelier. For SKN, the atelier focus was "Decentring Humans From The Design Process And Combatting The Climate And Biodiversity Crisis Through Architectural Design". The approach was very heavily focussed on entanglement with nature in design, achieving net zero life carbon and making use of passive solutions where possible. The approach doesn't neglect humans, however it considers them as simply one of the many species that use the structure.

The approach is challenging to get to grips with, however taking on the SKN challenges has left me in a position where I can confidently say my design work is climate and biodiverse conscious, as well as being knowledgeable about the impacts of architecture on biodiversity and methods of inclusion into the design process to make designs better for both the users and the ecologies.
