Professional Studies 2 - The Merseyway SKN

Project Brief

PS2 investigates the Merseyway shopping centre in Stockport, focussing on the failing state of shopping centres and the brief investigating methods to revitalise interest and footfall to the area as well as incorporation of natural species in the design. The site provided many opportunities and challenges, primarily the centre's construction over the river Mersey allowed for daylighting of the river to re-open the natural corridor and increase interest in the riverside. This project proposes a new artisans district and marketplace combined with new opportunities for the nesting of local avian wildlife around the newly daylit river, providing green space, creative outlets and support for local ecologies replacing the existing urban sprawl.

Design Concept

The concept developed around retaining the existing concrete structure of the centre, removing facades and interiors to create a framework for an open air market overlooking the newly daylit river. Connecting the existing market to the proposed one via the existing rooftop car park, the ground floor is allowed to rewild supporting local ecologies, as well as vertical circulation providing nests for avian species.

Site Phasing

Existing Plot split into three floors and roof car park.

Central core extracted according to model exploration of paths. Central space functions as light wells.

Vertical circulation inserted and connection to existing tower created. Ground floor vacated as natural space and flood plane

Remaining existing car park used as wild flower garden and recesses created according to unit positioning

Existing Merseyway provides little access to green space, and reduced footfall as well as blocking off nature's access to the river Mersey

Green space grows in and riverside walk is installed allowing for humans to enjoy the river as well providing benefits for mental health

Demolished aspects make way for new green spaces to grow, as well as uncovering the river providing ecologies benefits

The Merseyway development revitalises Stockports creative industry supporting local artists, whilst also supporting avian species in the area
